Nicky Simpson: Earth Mother and Specialist Plumber

My Triangle 2008.12 Nicky came to live in Central Tilba at the age of 14 with her parents, Simon and Linda Simpson. After completing high school in Narooma she set off to travel the world and, in her words, ‘to find somewhere better than Tilba’. After many years (approx 14) and many jobs and experiences in which she became a jack (jill?) of all trades and a master of none, she and hubby Ian (Hoots to some) settled in Central Tilba. She … Read more »

Ros Ruth and 27 years at Quaama Store

My Triangle 2008.11

Quaama in 1981 was a much smaller town than it is now. Houses were sparse and trees were even sparser. It was a far cry from the Hills District in Sydney. But it was here that Ros Ruth and her husband Greg decided to lay down some roots.

They’d been looking for a small business to buy, somewhere they could be at home for their young children Kylie and Mark after school and during the holidays. They … Read more »

Ken Matthews: singer, golfer, boundary rider

My Triangle 2007.09

Ken Matthews has lived in the Triangle area since 1974. He grew up working in the back country, boundary riding and droving. He then moved back to Sydney to do his National Service. Sydney was home for some years with various jobs and developing businesses of his own. There came a time where he was ready to get back to the country. He and his city-born wife, Beryl, bought a farm at Dignams Creek and … Read more »

Chester

My Triangle 2007.04.25

Chester has lived in the Triangle area on and off for about 54 years. Many Tilba locals would remember Donny, Ned and Chester all living up on Donny’s farm, Mt Pleasant, and when I asked Chester how long that was, he said, “Well you remember Samantha (the dog)? I remember Donny getting her from the Deer Farm as a pup and she was 23 when she died”. Chester lived in Balgownie (he was known as one of ‘The Balgownie Boys’) and worked at the Coalcliff Coal Mine, which closed in 1982. He belonged to the Mt Pleasant … Read more »

My Triangle 2006.06

How long have you lived in the Triangle?

I grew up and lived in Bega for 28 years and moved to Cobargo two years ago to join Angela and Rob at Benny’s Butchery

What is your favourite landmark?

Cobargo Pub springs to mind, but if you mean scenery, Horseshoe Bay and Cuttagee Beach and the whole coastline are hard to beat.

What makes you really laugh?

The photo in last year’s Triangle of the elephants walking down the main street – also some of the funny yarns we hear in the shop – they keep … Read more »

MY TRIANGLE 2006.05.01

How long have you lived in the Triangle?

Forever in my heart, sometimes I’ve travelled away but I always come back.

Where in the Triangle area do you live?

At Umbarra Cultural Centre.

What is your favourite landmark?

It would have to be Gulaga, I have strongly identified with her always, even as a child before I understood the spiritual connection.

What does the Gulaga Biamanga handback mean to you?

Freedom. Our people have some freedom to make some decisions about our sacred places. Our women … Read more »
