After six or so years of opening for special events only, the canteen at Quaama Public School is being prepped for what will be a most welcome return. Very soon tasty fortnightly orders will be available for students to enjoy. To keep it going, though, we need a little help from the wider community.

For many of us, a canteen is a simple pleasure that has become a very fond school memory. The anticipation of perusing the menu and choosing your favourite treats is a delight which adds a special excitement to the usual school lunch.

I am a parent and P&C member, and I decided that it was worth tackling the canteen challenge. With strong support from parents, the school and the P&C committee, I have completed the required food safety training, cleared out and reorganised the canteen, and developed a new menu that meets current nutritional requirements.

In smaller communities, these things work best when everyone chips in. With a few extra volunteers, we can keep the canteen on the calendar and give Quaama’s students the chance to enjoy a school tradition that generations before them have loved. As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child.
