Dance, drumming and sculptures
Bermagui has it all!
Two outstanding Far South Coast performing arts companies will collaborate for an event to help kick off the opening of Sculpture Bermagui. Join FLING Physical Theatre and Stonewave Taiko for a world-premiere performance of Okina Mura: Big Village amongst the sculptures on the grass at Horseshoe Bay, Bermagui.
With music composed by David Hewitt and movement devised by Paddy Meessmann, Christopher Wade and FLING Company members, the project plays with the theme of collective energy and draws on movement patterns and tones from the natural world and those made by humans. Swarming, churning and charged with the resonant sounds of the taiko drums, it’s a visual and kinesthetic clash of joyful dance, drumming and artistic expression.
FLING Physical Theatre is an award-winning, youth dance organisation based on Djiringanj land in the Bega Valley, NSW. It has been creating exceptional work with young people since 2001 and is the largest and most prominent youth dance organisation in the state. It comprises three age groups: FLING Company with performers aged 14-21, FLUX Creators aged 11-14 and YFLING aged 7-10.
Stonewave Taiko was founded by David Hewitt in 2014 in Bega and is dedicated to the art of Japanese drumming, bringing the vibrant tradition of taiko to audiences and students alike. The ensemble’s performances and classes are infused with the spirit of rhythm and community. Over the years, what started as a small group has grown to include over 35 enthusiastic members who meet weekly in Bega and Cobargo, each bringing their unique background and energy to the group.
Don’t miss this exhilarating performance of Okina Mura: Big Village at 5.30 pm Saturday, 7 March on the grass at Horseshoe Bay.
