An ancient comic play comes to Bega
Theatre Onset is preparing to stage an Ancient Greek classic, Lysistrata: A Woman’s Translation by Drue Robinson. This version of Lysistrata is the only modern adaptation of Aristophanes’s classic comedy that is entirely in rhyme.
Lysistrata, an Athenian woman fed up with war, rallies the women of Greece to seize the Treasury and all its money, stage a sex strike and force the men of each warring faction to sign a truce. This makes for a fast-paced and bawdy affair, including the pompous Magistrate’s antics of male domination, and the celibacy-sworn Myrrhine’s relentless teasing of her sex-starved husband. Meanwhile, the Chorus of Old Women and the Chorus of Old Men square off in an hilarious battle of wits and guts, ultimately resulting in a reunion of genders, ages and political positions.
The play is directed by Mahamati and features a large cast of 25 local actors, all ages from 17 to 85 years old.
Theatre Onset invites you to experience this irreverent and very naughty play at the old Uniting Church, 125 Gipps St, Bega, with performances running from Friday 20 to Sunday 29 March.
Tickets are $30, $25 (concession and Theatre Onset members) and $18 (school and Higher Education students aged 17+). Tickets are available through Trybooking – go to the website and insert Lysistrata, Bega and 20 March in the relevant boxes to buy tickets. For more information look up Theatre Onset – we’re on FaceBook and Instagram.
There is very little coarse language but an enormous amount of sexual innuendo, jokes and comic violence so best if young people attending are aged over 17.
We look forward to sharing this comic piece of theatre with you!
Mahamati, Director, Theatre Onset
